Rorate Caeli is Latin for “Drop down, ye heavens” and are the opening words of the Introit (which is an opening psalm or antiphon), coming from Isaiah 45:8.
“Rorate, caeli, desuper, et nubes pluant justum, aperiatur terra, et germinet Salvatorem.”
“Drop down dew, ye heavens, from above, and let the clouds rain the just: let the earth be opened and bud forth a Savior.” – Isaiah 45:8
A Rorate Caeli Mass is traditionally celebrated just before dawn in Advent as a devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Mass is only lit by candles, representing Mary’s role in bringing the Light of the World into the darkness of the world.

Christmas, as we behold the infant Jesus in the crib, let us remember that God does not leave us alone in our human experiences—with its weaknesses, struggles, trials, sufferings and moments of sadness
and loneliness—as well as its moments of wonder and joy. Through Jesus Christ, born of Mary, He has taken our human nature into His very own divine nature. There is nothing in our lives that we can’t share with God, nothing too insignificant or too overwhelming that we can’t bring before him in prayer. And if we do this, not only will we be comforted, but we will also begin to live his very own divine life here on earth.
